The celebration is a recognition of the impact these non-profit centers have made in local communities. Ron Goss, Director for the Grants Pass center, believes small businesses are the heart of the communities they serve.
"Small businesses are really out there to define what is a niche, what's unique to southern Oregon," he said. "Tourism, attracting new businesses, attracting new people that want to come and be employed from a professional standpoint-- those are the sort of things that they really contribute to."
SBDC services are open to anyone looking to start their own business, or expand a current one. Last year, the RCC SBDC in Grants Pass counseled 384 clients and held 82 training events. All together, they helped form over $18 million in capital and created 55 local jobs.
The location is one of 19 across the state, and hundreds across the country.
Small Business Development Centers across the country celebrated National SBDC day on Wednesday.
"We're not here to make much money," said Goss. "This is a non-profit organization, so the satisfaction of being involved in the SBDC really has to be tied to the satisfaction that you get from helping someone." Goss said one of their most prominent programs is one-on-one business advising.
"That's provided free of charge," he said. "There's not really any other resources in southern Oregon where small businesses can come in and say, 'This is my issue. This is what i'm trying to solve with my business.'" SBDC also provides low-cost training classes, connections to financing options and mentorship.
For more than 20 years, business owner Anna Minter has taken advantage of SBDC's services. She said the center helped her business find direction.
"I've been involved with 15 different classes, and sometimes they are months long. So I've really made this a second home," she said. In southern Oregon, there are SBD Centers located in Grants Pass, Medford and Ashland.
