Medford, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) and Safe Families for Children are launching a collaborative pilot demonstration project with the goal of improving the lives of children in need in Oregon and to help to deflect children from needing to enter the state foster care system. The Safe Families program provides opportunities for families to access supportive resources, including volunteer host families for parents or guardians who may be experiencing a crisis and need a safe place for their children to stay temporarily. Volunteer families host children in their homes for periods typically ranging from one day to six months, with the average stay around 27 days. Safe Families also offers services such as a Family Coach, Family Friend, and Resource Friend that create a network of support for families in need of help.  Executive Director of Hearts With A Mission was recently appointed as the Oregon State Director of the Safe Families Oregon Collaborative. “We’re really excited to be partnering with DHS in this important endeavor,” said Kevin Lamson, “We hope this can become a model for other counties across the State of Oregon, as well as in other states. We feel very blessed to have this opportunity to provide hope for hurting kids and their families in our community. Hearts With A Mission represents Jackson, Josephine, and Lincoln County who will be participating in the Collaborative Pilot Project.
The collaboration involves a three-year pilot demonstration project partnering with DHS in Oregon to deflect children and families from entering the state foster care system. The pilot partnership launched July 1st in twelve Oregon counties: Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, Marion, Polk, Yamhill, Baker, Lincoln, Lane, Deschutes, Jackson and Josephine. DHS and Safe Families will collaboratively train screening staff, caseworkers and supervisors in all of the Safe Family pilot areas so that they are able to prioritize families who could  appropriately be served by the Safe Families program “Safe Families for Children hosts vulnerable children and creates an extended family-like support system for families through a community of devoted volunteers who are motivated by compassion to keep children safe and families intact,” said Lamson.           Please consider joining our volunteer community and be part of the solution of keeping children safe with their families.
