For the past two years, KOBI-TV NBC5 and the Southern Oregon Sports Commission have worked locally to improve sportsmanship and good behavior at youth sporting events by promoting the Know Your Role campaign. The message says, “You can be a coach, an athlete, a parent or a referee. Pick one and know your role.”
Banners have been hung in gyms and on playing fields touting the message in the hopes that terrible behavior from the sidelines will decrease. In addition to the banners and posters at schools, NBC5 has aired several public service announcements on their station throughout the day.
Last month, NBC5 and SOSC awarded the first “Know Your Role” scholarship to a local high school senior who exhibited outstanding sportsmanship, a strong work ethic, was dedicated in the classroom as well as their sport, and one who is considered a leader and role model for other students.
The 2019 recipient of the $2,500 scholarship was Ashland High School athlete Dane Reynolds, who exemplifies everything Know Your Role is about. Dane participated in football, alpine skiing and baseball at Ashland High School. He plans on attending the Honors College at Oregon State University with the goal of becoming a dentist.
The scholarship was presented by NBC5 General Manager Bob Wise during a live news broadcast on May 30, 2019.
“I’m pleased to be able to present you with this certificate that will provide $2,500 to use at the college or trade school of your choosing. Congratulations Dane, we look forward to hearing more from you down the road,” Wise said. You can watch the segment here.

NBC5 also wants to thank our other sponsors of the Know Your Role campaign: The Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe, Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Jackson County Prevention.
