How Oregon Works: A worsening labor shortage is stunting $1B nursery sector's growth
What’s the biggest challenge facing the industry? Labor, labor, labor. It’s difficult because of the type of work. It’s skilled labor, but it’s also hard work. It’s year-round. The difficulties our nurseries are seeing is that there is a market there to grow by 10 to 20 percent because of our ability to produce plants, but we’re only growing at 2 percent because of the lack of availability of labor. We’re working in Washington D.C. on immigration reform. We’re at the tip of the spear as an organization. We’re telling them that it’s an economic cap on our industry.

But this time, I notice something new. Beneath the usual can-do attitude there is an inkling of something else: Mild disorientation and even signs of exhaustion. “It’s like sprinting all you can, and then you turn a corner and find that you are actually setting out on a marathon,” he remarks at one point. And as we speak, this sneaking feeling of not keeping pace turns out to be Nick’s true concern: Is he about to lose his magic touch and burn out?

Recognition, appreciation and celebration.
Some might accuse me of being soft on the values of the heart in all areas of life, including my organizational work. Maybe I am, but I have read countless books and articles that suggest that the best way to get positive results with people is to extend kindness and respect. Perhaps, some people silently believe in these values, but habitually micro-manage. We know the command and control model worked in the past, but at what cost? It tends to demotivate, creates descension, and breeds unhappiness in people who can’t wait to jump ship for a better company. I know there is another way to lead that creates loyalty, excellence and trust.
